Worlands in West Ham

This page documents a line of Worlands descended from a line that originated in Bedfordshire and later moved (from the early 1700a) to Cambridgeshire.

1840 - James Worland moves to London

It seems that a James Worland (born in 1819 or 1820) made his way down to London before 1840. It is believed that James Worland's parents were Joseph and Sarah Worland (nee Pratt). If this assumption is correct, then James was the older brother of Joseph Worland who was sent as a convict to New South Wales in 1849.

James Worland was recorded as a ship dealer, and is probably the man with that name who married Ann Haston (born 1818) in Stepney, London on 28 December 1840. James and Ann Worland had two children before Ann died in 1852 (see below):

1841 census for Meldreth/Melbourn Cambridgeshire

The 1841 census was carried out on the night of Sunday 6 June 1841. Curiously, neither James Worland (born 1820) nor his wife Ann (who was heavily pregnant with her first child) are identifiable in the 1841 census. As James later noted in the the 1851 census that he was born in Meldreth (not Melbourn), the following individuals are listed in both locations:

The man believed to be James' father, Joseph Worland and his wife Sarah Worland and the following children, were listed in the 1841 census living at Emmanuel Lane, St Andrew the Great, Cambridge. This appears to be the same group as listed in the 1851 census but the details in 1841 do not seem to be correct.

Joseph Worland, the eldest son of Joseph and Sarah Worland, was caught stealing and subsequently tried for burglary at the Cambridge Assizes on 19 March 1847. He was sentenced to a period of 7 years. His sentenced was changed to seven years transportation to Australia. Joseph was transferred to the convict ship Adelaide which departed London on 17 August 1849. The Adelaide was carrying 303 male convicts and travelled via Portland. For details of his life in Australia, see this page.

1851 census (NEEDS CHECKING)

The following Worland groupings appear in the 1851 census in Poplar, London. The details need to be confirmed from the original census details but the listed for Poplar appears to be the same family line documented on this page.

Poplar

Bethnal Green

Saint James Clerkenwell

Islington

St Mary's Lambeth

All Hallows London Wall, City of London

1852/1853 - Death of Ann Worland, James re-marries

Ann Worland (nee Haston) (born 1818), the wife of James Worland (born 1820), died in 1852, an event possibly related to the birth of her son Robert Worland in 1851.

Based on the names in the 1861 census, James Worland then appears to have married Mary Ann Wells in Stepney, London, in 1853. They appear to have had two children (needs confirmation from online records):

These events may also be connected with the late baptism of James' children from Ann on 12 March 1854.

Mary Ann Worland (born 1828) died in West Ham in 1897 (BDM Record).

1861 census (NEEDS CHECKING)

In the 1861 census, we see the following group in Essex. This grouping needs confirmation from the original census records as the online version is different from the details below (obtained in around 2010). Also note that, if it is correct that James re-married after the death of his wife Ann, then the mother of Henry and John is Mary Ann Worland (born 1828).

The online (FindMyPast) version shows only three children at West Ham:

1863 - James Worland marries Margaret Cockshott

James Worland (born 1842, the son of James and Ann Worland) married Margaret Ann Cockshott in the third quarter of 1863 in West Ham (BDM record). James had several occupations as shown below when his children were born.

James and Margaret Worland had the following children:

  • Augustus Henry Worland (14 June 1864, baptised 24 July 1864, West Ham, Essex (BDM record) - 1906, Sydney Australia). His father James was recorded in his birth record as a fitter.
  • Raymond James Worland (4 December 1865, baptised 20 December 1854, West Ham, Essex (BDM record) - 1912, West Ham). His father James was recorded in his birth record as a Licensed Victualler
  • Lillian Jessie Worland (1867, West Ham (BDM record) - )
  • Albert Thomas Worland (1869, West Ham, Essex (BDM record but parent's names not seen) - )
  • Clifford Oscar Worland (1 January 1871, West Ham, Essex (BDM record) - 1887, West Ham, Essex). His father James was recorded in his birth record as a shipping dealer.
  • Florence Louisa Worland (5 May 1872, West Ham, Essex (BDM record) - (possibly 1970 'Florence Louisa Butler' (BDM Record)). Her father James was recorded in her birth record as a ship store dealer. Married either William Porteous Bell or Henry James Butler in Poplar, London, in 1889 (BDM Record).
  • Clarence Percy Worland (6 October 1873, West Ham, Essex (BDM record) - ). Joined the military, served overseas, settled in Northern Ireland. See below.
  • Coincidentally, an Abbis Worland married in Royston, Hertfordshire (a few miles south of Meldreth) also in 1863. Note that the name Abbis Worland is specific to Meldreth; this person is very likely to be linked with Abbis Worland (1781 - 1839) and may be the same person as Abbis Worland (born about 1834 - 1893) who married Mary Ann Driver in Meldreth on 18 July 1863. (In other words, the two marriages in 1863 refer to the same couple).

    1864

By the date John Worland (born 1855) was baptised in 1864, his father was recorded as a corn chandler.

Augustus Henry Worland is likely to be the child with that same name (the only one in the timeframe) born in 1864 in West Ham, Essex. His mother's maiden name was Cockshott. (FindMyPast).

    1871 census

James and Margaret Worland appear in the 1871 census in the following family group.

James' parents and his brothers are also present in West Ham in 1871.

1874 - Death of James Worland (born 1841)

James Worland, born 1841, died in West Ham in 1874, leaving his young wife Margaret with six children.

It appears that Margaret Ann Worland (nee Cockshott) may have re-married in 1877 at St Saviour Southwark in London. A woman with this name married either Ernest Albert Askins or Charles Law. This fact is not certain and does not seem to be supported by the 1881 census details that shows Margaret as the head of the household - see below.

    1881 census

In the 1881 census, Augustus appears in the following group living at 41 Sarah Street, West Ham, London and Essex.

1888 - Death of James Worland (born 1820/21)

James Worland (born 1820 or 1821) died in 1888 in West Ham, Essex. (BDM Record).

1890 - Raymond James Worland marries Edith Gray

Raymond James Worland (born 1866), married Edith Gray in West Hame in 1890 (BDM Record). They had the following children:

From 1890 - Augustus Henry Worland migrates to Australia

At some point between 1881 and 1890, Augustus Henry Worland migrated to Australia. This event may be connected with the death of his grandfather James Worland (born 1821) in West Ham in 1888.

It is not yet known when Augustus Henry Worland arrived in Australia but it must have been before 1890 - he married Bridget Higgins in Sydney in 1890 (NSW BDM Ref 1333).

    1891 Census

The 1891 census shows the following following family in West Ham. The original census needs to be viewed to see whether they are living in the same household:

Augustus Worland was already in Australia at this time. Clifford is not listed. The only Clifford Worland found in the BDM records from this date is Clifford V Worland who married Margaret M Duhig in Poplar in 1940. The name and location would appear to suggest he is related.

Clarence Worland joined the Dorsetshire Regiment - 39th & 54th Foot in West Ham, London, Middlesex, England by 1893 and is believed to have seen service in South Africa and Egypt before settling in Ireland. Click this link for more information.

1898 - Albert Thomas Worland marries

Albert Thomas Worland married Rosa Jane Allen in 1898 in West Ham (BDM Record). They had the following children:

    1901 and 1910 Census

Margaret A Worland does not appear in the 1901 census.

Raymond J Worland, along with Edith Worland are recorded living in West Ham, Essex area in both 1901 and 1911. Raymond is recorded as a dock labourer in 1911.

Albert Thomas Worland is not obviously recorded in the 1901 census, but appears in the 1911 census as a Licensed Victualler in West Ham.
